History of City

In the Punjab Province of Pakistan, Multan is the capital of the Multan District. It is located in the province’s southern region and is steeped in its history. According to the 98 censuses, the city has a population of over 3.8 million, making it the sixth largest city in Pakistan.

About 966 kilometers from Karachi, it is located east of the Chenab River, roughly in the country’s center. A bustling city full of mosques, bazaars, and exquisitely constructed tombs, Multan is also known as the “City of Shrines and Pirs.”

It is Multan International Airport that links flights into major cities within Pakistan and cities in the Persian Gulf.

The city’s primary industries are metalworking sugar, flour, oil milling, textiles production, soap, fertilizer, and glass. Multan is also famous for its handicrafts, particularly enamel work and pottery.

One of the subcontinent’s most ancient cities, Multan takes its name after an image found in The sun’s temple, a temple that was built in the pre-Islamic period.

In AD 641, the Chinese Buddhist scholar Hsuan Tsang visited the city destroyed by Alexander the Great (c.326 BC). Arabs captured the city in the 8th century, and then Timur retook it in 1398 from the Muslim Turkish conqueror Mahmud of Ghazna. Multan enjoyed peace under the Mughal Emperors in the 16th and 17th centuries.

In 1818 the city was conquered by Ranjit Singh, the leader of the Sikhs. The British controlled the city between 1848 and Pakistan was declared independent in 1947. Many landmarks include an old fort with the tombs of 14th-century two Muslim saints.
